Artist Statement
I am an artist inspired by nature and by the interactions of language and sound. I am intrigued by the resonances we create with our voices and with instruments made from natural materials, and how we use these to communicate with those around us. In working with natural materials, we develop language for what we call a mistake - sometimes a mistake can be a source of frustration, but also a mistake can be the start of an evolutionary sequence, or a happy encounter with the unknown.
In working with natural materials, we learn how all things are connected through environmental relationships with each other. Through collaboration, we mutually develop agreed-upon sounds that constitute our shared language and shared aesthetics. In the development of these aesthetics, I research the permeable boundaries between transcription, editing, notation, and improvisation.
Through my artistic practice, I reflect on the replication of forms and the flexibility of forms and how communication across space and time can generate meaning, beauty, and a feeling of connectedness with the world and with other beings. My musical practice explores intersections of sound, gesture, language, and the intentionality of mistakes, as well as music’s potential for self and group healing. My performance practice combines curation, historical research, and collaboration with others in the creation of new works and presentation of historical musical works.
